Intas Melonex Oral Suspension (Meloxicam) for Dogs

Melonex Oral Suspension by Intas is a veterinary anti-inflammatory and pain-relief medicine containing meloxicam, prescribed by vets to help manage pain, inflammation and stiffness in dogs. Given as an easy-to-measure liquid syrup, it is commonly used for conditions like joint pain, arthritis and post-operative recovery. This is a prescription medicine, so it should only be given to your dog on the advice and under the supervision of a qualified veterinarian.

🔒 Prescription (Rx) medicine. A valid veterinary prescription is required. Please upload your prescription at checkout. Melonex should only be used for the pet, condition, dose and duration your vet has specified.

What It Is & How It Works

Melonex for dogs contains the active ingredient meloxicam, which belongs to a group of medicines called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Internationally, meloxicam is also sold under brand names such as Metacam, so if your vet has mentioned that, this is the same molecule.

As an NSAID, meloxicam works by reducing the production of the substances in the body that cause inflammation, pain and fever. In practical terms, that means it can help ease the discomfort and swelling associated with painful conditions, and help a sore, stiff dog move and rest more comfortably. It sits within our wider dog pain relief range. It manages pain and inflammation, it does not cure the underlying condition, so your vet will treat the root cause alongside using it. Meloxicam is a symptomatic relief medicine, not an antibiotic and not a long-term solution on its own.

Dosage & How to Use

The most important thing to know about Melonex oral suspension dosage is that it is always decided by your veterinarian, and it is based on your dog’s exact body weight, condition, and overall health. There is no single "standard" dose that is safe for every dog, which is why this medicine is prescription-only.

Why do we not mention a dose here? Meloxicam is weight-based and has a narrow safety margin, so an incorrect amount can cause serious harm. We deliberately do not publish a dosage chart or millilitre figure, because the safe dose is the one your vet calculates for your individual dog. Never estimate it yourself, never use a leftover prescription, and never use another pet’s dose.

What you can generally expect, and should still confirm against your own vet’s instructions, is the following.

  • Follow the prescription exactly: give only the amount, frequency and number of days your vet has written down.

  • Usually given with or after food: NSAIDs are gentler on the stomach when not given on an empty stomach, but follow your vet’s specific direction.

  • Shake the bottle well and measure with the syringe or measure provided, so the dose your vet set is accurate.

  • Give for the shortest effective course: do not extend treatment beyond what your vet advised without checking back with them.

  • Ensure your dog always has access to fresh water during treatment.

Vet Tip - Dr. Devayani K, MVSc

"In my clinical experience, most parents don't struggle with giving Melonex; they struggle with consistency. I always tell pet parents to give it at the same time every day, ideally with a meal, since NSAIDs are gentler on the stomach that way and work best when blood levels stay steady. Keep a quick note on your phone each time you dose; I've seen accidental double doses happen simply because someone forgot they'd already given it that morning. And please don't stop or restart the course on your own once your dog seems better; inflammation can come back quietly before it's visibly obvious, and cutting the course short is one of the most common reasons dogs relapse. If you ever notice reduced appetite, dark stools, or your dog seeming unusually quiet, call your vet the same day rather than waiting it out."

A Serious Note on Cats

⚠️ Meloxicam must be used with extreme caution in cats. Cats are far more sensitive to NSAIDs than dogs, and repeated or incorrect dosing of meloxicam in cats is associated with serious kidney injury and can be fatal. Never give this medicine to a cat on your own judgment or based on a dog’s dose. It should only ever be used in a cat if a veterinarian has specifically prescribed it for that cat, at a dose they set, under their direct supervision. If you have a cat in pain, please consult a vet rather than reaching for a dog’s medicine.

What If You Miss a Dose?

If you forget a dose, do not panic and do not try to make up for it by giving extra.

  • Give the missed dose when you remember, unless it is already close to the next scheduled dose.

  • If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on as normal.

  • Never give two doses together or a double dose to catch up, as this raises the risk of side effects.

  • If you are unsure, or if your dog has missed several doses, check with your vet before continuing.

Safety Information & Side Effects

Like all NSAIDs, Melonex is effective but must be used carefully. Knowing the warning signs helps you use it safely and act quickly if something is not right.

Possible side effects

The most common side effects of NSAIDs in dogs relate to the stomach and gut. Contact your vet if your dog shows any of the following while on Melonex.

  • Reduced appetite, vomiting or diarrhoea.

  • Black, tarry or bloody stools, which can indicate stomach irritation or ulceration.

  • Unusual tiredness, lethargy or behaviour change.

  • Increased thirst or changes in urination, which can signal a kidney effect.

  • Any sign of an allergic reaction, such as facial swelling or skin bumps.

When it should be avoided or used with special care

Tell your vet before starting Melonex if your dog is in any of these categories, as it may not be suitable or may need extra monitoring.

  • Dogs with known kidney, liver, or heart problems, or stomach ulcers.

  • Dogs that are pregnant, nursing, or very young, and very old or dehydrated dogs.

  • Dogs already on another NSAID or a steroid, since combining them raises the risk of serious side effects. Always tell your vet what else your dog is taking.

  • Dogs with a known sensitivity to meloxicam or other NSAIDs.

If you suspect an overdose, or your dog shows severe vomiting, blood in stool or vomit, or collapse, treat it as an emergency and contact a vet immediately.

Storage & Handling

Store Melonex in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which matters in India’s heat and humidity. Keep the bottle tightly closed, shake before each use, and keep it well out of reach of children and pets. Do not use it beyond its expiry date, and check with your pharmacist on how to dispose of any leftover medicine safely rather than keeping it for future use.

Substitutes & Alternatives

If your vet prescribes a different option, or you need another form, these are comparable vet-prescribed choices. Always use the specific product your vet recommends. You can also browse the full joint and pain medicine range.

  • Intas Melonex Tablet (Meloxicam) (Rs 122): the same medicine in tablet form, if your vet prefers tablets over a syrup.

  • Azista Meloxista Oral Suspension (Meloxicam) (Rs 77): an alternative meloxicam syrup brand.

  • Corise Zeronac M Oral Suspension (Meloxicam) (Rs 84): another meloxicam syrup option.

  • Alembic Succedal (Carprofen) Tablets (Rs 131): a different NSAID molecule (carprofen), which a vet may choose instead.

Quick Tips

  • Always give with or after food unless your vet says otherwise.

  • Shake the bottle every time so the dose is even.

  • Keep fresh water available throughout treatment.

  • Watch the stool and appetite for the first few days.

  • Never share a dog’s NSAID with a cat.

FAQs

What is Melonex oral suspension used for?

Melonex oral suspension is a vet-prescribed anti-inflammatory and pain-relief medicine for dogs, containing meloxicam. It is commonly used to manage pain, inflammation and stiffness from conditions like arthritis and joint pain, and to help with post-operative discomfort. It should only be used as directed by your veterinarian.

Is Melonex the same as Metacam?

Both contain the same active ingredient, meloxicam, which is an NSAID used for pain and inflammation in dogs. Metacam is a well-known international brand of meloxicam, while Melonex is an Intas brand available in India. Your vet will prescribe whichever meloxicam product is appropriate and available for your dog.

What is the dosage of Melonex for dogs?

The dose is always set by your vet based on your dog’s exact weight, condition and health, so there is no safe standard dose to follow at home. Meloxicam has a narrow safety margin, so giving the wrong amount can be harmful. Always follow your vet’s written prescription precisely.

Can I give Melonex to my cat?

Only if a veterinarian has specifically prescribed it for your cat and is supervising treatment. Cats are very sensitive to NSAIDs like meloxicam, and incorrect or repeated dosing can cause serious kidney damage. Never give a cat a dog’s NSAID on your own judgement. For a cat in pain, consult a vet first.

How should I give Melonex syrup to my dog?

Shake the bottle well, measure the exact amount your vet prescribed using the syringe or measure provided, and give it with or after food to be gentler on the stomach. Give it at the same time each day, for only as long as your vet advised, and keep fresh water available.

Is Melonex safe for dogs?

When prescribed by a vet and given at the correct dose for the right duration, meloxicam is a widely used and effective pain reliever for dogs. Like all NSAIDs, it carries some risk of side effects, mainly stomach related, so it must be used under veterinary guidance and monitored, especially in dogs with other health conditions.

Can Melonex be used for fever or pain?

Meloxicam, the active ingredient, is an anti-inflammatory that can help reduce pain, inflammation and fever in dogs as part of vet-directed treatment. However, fever and pain can have many underlying causes that need proper diagnosis, so it should be used to treat a condition your vet has assessed, not as a general home remedy.
